Primary Rainforest

Where the canopy
has no ceiling

Three hundred metres above the forest floor, the emergent layer catches the first light. Dipterocarps older than living memory stand in silence, their crowns brushing clouds that never reach the ground.

The Bohorok

Water that remembers
the mountain

The Bohorok carries sediment from the Karo highlands, depositing minerals that feed the lowland forests. Its colour shifts with the season—coffee-brown after rain, jade-green in the dry months.

Bukit Lawang

A village at the
forest's edge

Bukit Lawang sits where the paved road ends and the trail begins. For three generations, families here have guided travellers into the Leuser Ecosystem—not as performers, but as neighbours sharing a backyard that happens to be a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The Wilderness

Where Ancient Forests Meet Uncharted Rivers

Deep in the heart of Sumatra, primary rainforests stand unchanged for millennia. Our expeditions trace hidden waterways and wildlife corridors known only to local rangers and the orangutans who navigate them.

The Mentawai Tribe

– The Mentawai people, whose roots trace back thousands of years (between 2000 and 500 BC), live in harmony with the rainforest in the Mentawai Islands.
They have cultivated a lifestyle deeply intertwined with nature.

– Within their communities, the Mentawai maintain a unique social structure, often residing in Uma, communal longhouses where extended families live together.
These are not just places of shelter but also serve as hubs for social interaction, shamanic rituals, and the passing down of ancestral knowledge.

Culture and Lifestyle

– At the heart of Mentawai identity lies their unique tattoo artistry. They reveal crucial details about the bearer’s origin, social standing, and hunting prowess, making each tattoo a rich narrative of the individual’s life within the tribe.

– The Mentawai people follow an animistic belief system known as Sabulungan, connecting the supernatural powers of ancestral spirits with the rainforest.
According to Mentawai beliefs, spirits inhabit the forest, sky, earth, and rivers.
The spirits are considered guardians, and the Mentawai believe that breaking taboos or making mistakes will incur their punishment.
The Sikerei (or shaman), revered spiritual leaders, are believed to possess the ability to communicate with these spirits.

– Also, Mentawai women engage in the unique tradition of sharpening their teeth to a pointed shape, viewing it as a symbol of beauty. This practice reflects a commitment to self-control over six human vices within their belief system…a Mentawai tradition among many other.

How's the trip going

Embark on an 4 to 7-day adventure

  • Embarking on the public ferry from Padang to Siberut Island
(operates only on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays)
    with departure at 07:00am.
Upon reaching Siberut Island, we’ll pause for a quick lunch at a local restaurant, provided by our team.
Following that, we’ll embark on an exploration of the jungle,
navigating rivers by traditional motor canoe, and then trek to the
Mentawai clan house to meet the Mentawai shaman and family,
    concluding our journey.
  • During our immersive stay in the Mentawai jungle, living traditionally
with a local family, you’ll experience the uniqueness of their culture
by conversing with them and engaging in daily activities.
This includes tasks such as preparing food, crafting poisoned weapons, cutting Sago trees, traditional fishing techniques..,
and observing shamanic ceremonies if they have any during your visit.
  • At the end of the adventure, we’re returning to the village near Siberut port after a final breakfast with the Mentawai tribe. Lunch, packing, and departure from Siberut by ferry around 15:00, heading back to Padang.

Your Tour, Your Way

The example provided above is optimized for a 4 to 7-day trip, crafted based on the recommended longer stay in the Mentawai jungle, as the journey is expected to be physically demanding for some of you.

Feel free to extend your stay! We can adjust the price to cover the added logistics for a longer trip.

Feel free to reach out to us for more information or to book your trip.

Information on Mentawai Tribe Tours

Please consider reading this,

if you're planning an excursion with us in the Mentawai tribe territory.

Here’s a comprehensive, unfiltered (and possibly daunting) look at what you need to consider before heading to the Mentawai tribe. As I’ve (Fred) been there several times already, here’s what you need to know:

– Embarking on this adventure invites you to embrace its physical demands, designed to expand your comfort zone. Occasional organizational difficulties may affect some aspects of this adventure, such as route changes, hot weather, rain or high humidity.
Venturing into an infrastructure-free jungle, the Mentawai tribe’s recent openness to the world means there’s no straightforward and enduring path to get there.

– To ensure an intimate experience, we limit each trip to a maximum of 6 people, accompanied by a professional local guide and porters deeply connected to the Mentawai tribe.
If you prefer a more intimate experience with fewer participants, you can request a private group.

– The journey guarantees a rich exploration of local life and culture, offering opportunities to witness Shamanic rituals (if fortunate!) and engage in previously mentioned activities.
During your stay, keep it simple and open, don’t overdo it—allow time for a genuine connection.
Show interest by actively learning from the community, as they expect you to do. Stay fully present, enjoy the experience together and always ask permission before taking photos, respecting their privacy.

– When interacting with the tribe, it’s important to approach with respect.
Don’t assume they share our lifestyle; let’s avoid imposing our comforts on them. Instead, be an open-minded observer without judgment, appreciating the uniqueness of Mentawai tribe’s customs.
Please refrain from wearing expensive items such as earrings, necklaces, watches, etc…
Wearing them could catch the tribe’s interest, and they might find those items tempting enough to ask you about. Yup! Keep in mind their culture is quite different from ours. Just a heads up for a smoother interaction!

– In the humble settings of the areas we’ll visit, families generously hosting us offer basic accommodations, which differ from western standards.
You must adapt to the rustic living conditions of the remote Mentawai village, sleeping on the floor with a simple mat and mosquito net (provided for you) in the jungle at night.
Also, keep in mind, the river is the bathroom! Welcome to jungle life!
Embracing these conditions is essential for a fulfilling stay, contributing to an overall enriching and rewarding experience.

– As Mentawai tribes reside in remote jungle areas, accessing them involves navigating muddy, slippery terrain, occasionally requiring walking on log bridges crafted by the Mentawai.
(We will give you details on the necessary equipment to bring with you below)

– If you plan on taking photos, it’s essential to know that there’s no electricity in the Mentawai jungle. Make sure to charge your camera and phone in advance and bring an extra battery (or 2 !)

– Successful participation in this adventure requires good mental preparation and adaptability. We recommend being well-informed about Mentawai culture and jungle life before departure. Rest assured, the guide will provide a comprehensive briefing before the trip begins.

– Also, please refrain from wearing expensive items such as earrings, necklaces, watches, etc… Wearing them could catch the tribe’s interest, and they might find those items tempting enough to ask you about.
Yup! Keep in mind their culture is quite different from ours. Just a heads up for a smoother interaction!

  LAST BUT NOT LEAST :
It is prohibited to attempt a trip through the Mentawai Rainforest without a professional guide. Only they will be able to guide you through the jungle and take you to your destination without problem. Do not attempt to go without a guide.
