Sumatra
Wild
Custom expeditions deep into the rainforest, encountering wild orangutans, Mentawai tribes and volcanic landscapes far off the beaten track.
More than a trip —
a true immersion
I am Fred, a French guide based in Sumatra for many years. I create fully personalised expeditions for those who want to discover this island differently — away from standard tours, deep in nature, connecting with the local communities that make Sumatra so special.
Every journey is built around your wishes, your pace and your dreams. Wild orangutans at Bukit Lawang, Batak culture on Lake Toba, volcanoes and hot springs in Brastagi, Mentawai tribes on their paradise islands.

Discover Sumatra’s Unique Wildlife
Rare Species In Sumatra
Sumatra is one of only two places on Earth where wild orangutans live. The island also shelters endemic Sumatran tigers, elephants, rhinos, and siamangs. In its rainforests thrive sun bears, hornbills, the Sumatran ground cuckoo, and even the rare Rafflesia arnoldii — the world’s largest individual flower. Unique reptiles and amphibians further enrich the island’s extraordinary biodiversity.
National Parks To Explore
Over 10 national parks, like Gunung Leuser National Park , Kerinci Seblat, or Bukit Barisan Selatan await. You can witness biodiversity firsthand in these areas. Thus, exploring them is a must.
Explore Sumatra’s Natural Wonders
Volcanic Landscapes
Sumatra is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire. More than 50 volcanoes shape its rugged landscape. From the town of Bukittinggi you can admire the majesty of Mount Marapi. Mount Sibayak, with its hot springs at the base, offers an easy climb for all. Mount Kerinci, surrounded by tea and coffee fields, is Indonesia's highest volcano and a challenge even for experienced trekkers.
Lake Toba
Lake Toba, located in North Sumatra, is the world’s largest volcanic crater lake. At its center lies Samosir Island, a high plateau home to the Batak people. Their houses are carved with traditional patterns. Batak music and rituals are still part of daily life.
Immerse in Sumatra’s Rich Cultures
Cultural Diversity & Traditions
Sumatra is a land of deep traditions and cultural richness. For example, the Batak people follow the marga clan system. Traditional healers, rituals, medicinal knowledge, and ancient magic books (pustaha) are all part of their heritage.
Minangkabau people follow a matrilineal system, where property and lineage pass through women. Their Rumah Gadang houses, with buffalo horn-shaped roofs, reflect their identity. They are also known for the Pacu Jawi, an ancient centenarian cow race held in muddy rice fields.
Off the coast, the Mentawai tribe — who have lived there for at least 2,500 years — preserves animist beliefs through tattoos, ceremonies, and rituals closely tied to nature.
Savor Sumatran Coffee
Coffee Experience
Sumatra’s bold, earthy coffee is a cornerstone of Indonesia’s top coffee reputation. In Aceh’s Gayo Highlands, traditional cultivation methods yield world-class Arabica beans, celebrated for their complex flavor and aroma. Additionally, Sumatra is renowned for producing kopi luwak — a rare and exclusive coffee that delights connoisseurs worldwide.
