West Sumatra is shaped by Minangkabau culture, volcanic landscapes and centuries-old traditions. The Minangkabau people, part of one of the world's largest matrilineal societies, continue to preserve their traditions through Rumah Gadang architecture, centuries-old ceremonies and the Pacu Jawi bull race.

Harau Valley is known for its towering cliffs, rice terraces and quiet villages set beneath steep canyon walls. Lake Maninjau is surrounded by volcanic hills, winding roads and villages overlooking the water. Local crafts, regional cuisine and traditional music remain closely tied to daily life across West Sumatra, where guests are welcomed with generosity and respect.

It was my third trip to Indonesia, and I spent 7 days in West Sumatra. It felt completely different from Java, quieter, more traditional and much more personal. One of my favorite memories was staying with Ibu and Bapak (mother and father) in their village, learning how to cook rendang and sharing meals with the family every evening. Being able to experience moments like this on the other side of the world, with people who welcomed me so warmly into their home, is something I will never forget.
